Aqua-marine based processed foods pushed in Surigao City

by Fryan E. Abkilan

Surigao City (19 February) -- Processed food focusing mainly on aqua-marine products in a One Town one Product (OTOP) program by the Department of Trade and Industry is underway.

This was revealed by Mayor Alfonso Cassura during a meeting with the City Development council members held recently.

Casurra said the city government strongly supports the local marine products made by Surigaonons specifically fish kikiam, dried squid scallops, rice scallops, debone danggit, cuttlefish, crab cocktail and crab meat.

"We wanted to really have our own product", Casurra added. The city government also has plans to promote these local products through trade fairs and exhibits which will help a lot in identifying buyers.

Billy General, provincial director of DTI here added that their agency is now focused on these aqua-marine products as OTOP in the city for she believed that these products have a competitive advantage for its high demand in the market.

OTOP Philippines is one of the priority programs of the Arroyo administration to promote entrepreneurship and create jobs. Through OTOP, local executives of cities/municipalities take the lead in identifying, developing and promoting specific product or service that have a competitive advantage.
