Camiguin boosts efforts to maintain low index crimes, enforces discipline

CAMIGUIN (PIA) — As the Philippine National Police (PNP)-Camiguin reported a notable decrease in index crimes from April to June 2024, with cases dropping from ten in 2023 to five this year, including incidents of physical injury and rape, the provincial government has mobilized Task Force Disiplina along with local law enforcement to ensure locals and tourists follow rules and maintain a secure, well-organized province.

In a joint meeting on June 21, various councils and task forces convened to address these statistics and other pressing issues affecting the province. They discussed strategies to sustain this downward trend while tackling emerging challenges, particularly the observed resurgence in illegal drug activities.

“It has been observed that there is a resurgence of illegal drug personalities in the province based on the anti-illegal drug achievement reports from the 2nd quarter of 2023 to the present. With this, the Camiguin Police Provincial Office would like to request from our barangay officials that they continue their active and full support in monitoring the recorded illegal drug personalities in their respective barangays,” said PCol Benbo Jumalon, Camiguin Provincial Police Office provincial director.

To further aid in maintaining order in Camiguin, Task Force Disiplina Focal Person Patrick Dael recommended the strict implementation of parking areas prior to the issuance of business permits and the conduct of simultaneous road clearing operations for all barangays. He also recommended equipping those assigned to the field with official violation receipts and traffic violation citation tickets.

In traffic incidents, PNP recorded nine crimes, including five cases of reckless imprudence (RIR) leading to physical injury and four cases of RIR damage to property. The office has also issued 852 citation tickets for strictly enforcing local ordinances.

For his part, Gov. Xavier Jesus Romualdo urged the barangay officials to adhere to the requirements of the Task Force Disipina, especially in sending their personnel to training and obtaining deputized barangay enforcers.

Kapoy na kaayo mangasaba, balik-balik og istorya. Basta ang effect ani, kung dili mo mag-perform, ang inyong pagdagan affected,” Romualdo said.

(It’s so tiring to reprimand, repeating the same story. If you do not perform, your running for office will surely be affected.)

He also warned those with citation tickets who don’t act on their penalties not to wait until their appeals are finally ignored and cases are filed, leading to conviction.

The provincial government held the Joint Meeting of the Provincial Peace and Order Council, Provincial Anti-Drug Abuse Council, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, Provincial Task Force for COVID-19, Provincial Task Force on Ending Local Communist Armed Conflict, Provincial Task Force Disiplina, Local Committee on Anti-Trafficking-Violence Against Women and Their Children, Local Council for the Protection of Children, and Solid Waste Management Board at the Multi-Purpose Hall, 3rd Floor, New Provincial Capitol Building, Barangay Pandan, Mambajao, Camiguin, on June 21.

The meeting aims to enhance coordination, align efforts, review progress, promote comprehensive governance, strengthen community safety and well-being, and ensure compliance and accountability. (RTP/PIA-10/Camiguin)
