Camiguin’s Hibok-Hibok Festival 2024 features sports, culture, environmental care

CAMIGUIN (PIA) — San Juan sa Hibok-Hibok Festival 2024, organized by the provincial government, featured sports competitions, discos, swimming, volleyball tournaments, races, local cuisine, games, and a traditional fluvial procession. 

Held on June 22-24, the event kicked off with sports competitions showcasing local talent, followed by an evening disco that brought together residents and visitors alike for a night of dancing and enjoyment.

“Mao na atong opening ceremony, and then sports events. Nag-start diay ang sports event, diha ang elimination round. Ang atong event ana is interagency, men and women, beach volleyball tournament. And then pagkagabii dayon disco didto sa atong Lagundi Covered Court,” said Noe Palad of the Camiguin Tourism Office.

(That’s our opening ceremony, and then sports events. The sports event has begun, and the next step is the elimination round. Our beach volleyball tournament is an interagency event for men and women. And then in the evening, there is a disco at our Lagundi Covered Court.)

People gathered early in the morning for the thanksgiving mass to begin the final day of the festival, followed by a traditional fluvial procession that highlighted Camiguin’s maritime heritage.

The Great Hibok-Hibok Race was a highlight, featuring Scubasurero, Baroto Race, and Bamboo Boxing. These are underwater cleanup efforts and traditional boat races, showcasing both local traditions and environmental awareness efforts.

Residents gathered at the Pista Sa Nayon on the festival grounds to enjoy local cuisine and crafts, while friendly competitions and traditional games added to the festive atmosphere. The event concluded with an Aqua Rave Party, where attendees danced and celebrated together late into the night.

The winners of Mr. and Ms. Hibok-Hibok 2024 were Icole Vener Guillen and Rika Ann Popera Alido.

Palad said the festival aims to promote cultural heritage and community spirit, showcase local talent, boost tourism, encourage environmental awareness, celebrate achievements, enhance social interaction, strengthen traditions, support the local economy, and promote health and wellness by encouraging active participation in sports and physical activities.
