Candon City transforms arena into gov’t hub, bringing services closer to resident

VIGAN CITY, Ilocos Sur (PIA) — Residents in Candon City, Ilocos Sur, and surrounding areas can now access essential government services closer to home thanks to a new initiative by the city government.

The Candon City Arena has been transformed into a service hub, housing agencies like the Philippine Statistics Authority, the Civil Service Commission, and even a Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) office.

“It is a very important initiative because part of the advocacy of the city government is to bring closer the services of the government to the people; it is the very core of public service,” Leoncio Balbin, Candon’s city information officer, said on Friday.

The hub extends its reach beyond Candon City, benefiting nearby towns in La Union, Abra, and the province’s second district.

This move strengthens Candon City’s reputation as a regional convergence zone, offering not only commercial activities, trade, education, and healthcare but also vital government services.

The newly opened DFA office is a prime example.

Previously, Ilocos Sur residents had to travel far to access DFA services.

Now, the arena provides a convenient one-stop shop for various government needs, fulfilling Mayor Eric Singson’s vision through partnerships with different agencies.

From June 17 to 21, the office accommodated up to 250 walk-in applicants and will transition to an appointment system for smoother operation.

Reynalyn Gorospe, a resident of Candon City and a graduating student, said this initiative will help her obtain employment requirements more easily, especially as she prepares to apply for jobs.

“I would not have to spend hours on my commute to Vigan City, Ilocos Norte, or La Union for documents that I need, and it also lessens my expenses. At least now that we have the government offices closer to us, it is more convenient,” she said.

While the arena’s location might be slightly out of town, the city government has addressed this by offering free shuttle services.

Two designated shuttles, a coaster for 30 and a van for 16 passengers, operate from Candon City Plaza, easily recognizable by their “shuttle arena” signage.

This initiative by the Candon City government makes life significantly easier for residents, eliminating unnecessary travel and streamlining access to crucial government services. (AMB/ATV/PIA Ilocos Sur)
