DOST-FNRI marks 50th seminar series with focus on youth, new standards

MANILA, (PIA) — The Department of Science and Technology’s Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) is holding its 50th Seminar Series with a focus on empowering young people and showcasing new developments in the field.

The two-day event, which will kick off on Wednesday, July 3, at the Sheraton Manila Hotel in Pasay, will feature a mix of lectures, poster exhibits, and research presentations.

Day 1 Highlights

The opening ceremony will include an inspirational message from DOST Secretary Dr. Renato U. Solidum, Jr., followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a poster exhibit.

A special lecture titled “The Evolution of FSS” will trace the history of the seminar series, while a testimonial session will highlight its role in continuing education for nutrition and health professionals.

Dr. Gerard Bryan Gonzales, a Balik Scientist from Ghent University, Belgium, will deliver a keynote address on global trends in food and nutrition research.

The afternoon will feature an undergraduate research competition showcasing the work of the next generation of nutrition and food technology experts.

Topics range from the potential of saluyot leaves for kidney health to the development of plant-based meat alternatives using local ingredients.

Technical sessions, on the other hand, will explore various aspects of nutrition, including tools and guidelines for healthcare professionals, nutrition across the lifespan, and the issue of hidden hunger.

Day 2 Focus

The second day delves deeper into specific areas like the link between nuclear science and nutritional studies in infants and children, the nutritional status of pregnant teenagers, and the impact of diet on blood pressure and quality of life in older adults.

Sessions will also address the challenge of hidden hunger, exploring the connection between vitamin A deficiency and type 2 diabetes, as well as the prevalence of anemia in Filipino households.

Food safety and quality will be a key theme, with presentations on detecting contamination in eggs and chicken, results from a national study on trans fats and minerals, and innovations in food products for school feeding programs.

While, the final session examines the relationship between food environment, economically disadvantaged areas, and nutritional outcomes, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Wrap-Up and Recognition

The seminar series concludes on July 4 with a closing ceremony featuring the announcement of winners in the undergraduate research competition and scientific poster competition.

The event is expected to wrap up with a message of appreciation from the organizer, DOST-FNRI.
