Ilocos Sur celebrates Pride Month with free HIV testing, volleyball games

VIGAN CITY, Ilocos Sur (PIA) — The Ilocos Sur provincial government is celebrating Pride Month with a day of free HIV/AIDS screening and orientation alongside an all-star volleyball league on Saturday, June 22, at the gymnasium in San Vicente, Ilocos Sur.

The event kicks off at 7:30 AM with the volleyball league, welcoming players of all genders.

The Provincial Youth Development Office, led by Olivia Marie Ibatuan, has also invited an organization to conduct a pre-game HIV/AIDS awareness session and will offer free screenings throughout the day.

“After the orientation, our community motivators are open to screening anyone interested to check their status because this is very important regardless of whether they are sexually active or not,” Ibatuan said in an interview with the Philippine Information Agency-Ilocos Sur.

The event goes beyond sports and health.

“This event creates a safe and inclusive space for people to gather, showcase their talents, and connect through their love of sports,” Ibatuan added.

Rhocky Amigable, an LGBTQIA+ community member and league participant, expressed his appreciation for the provincial government’s initiative.

“Our provincial government consistently supports activities that promote gender inclusivity and events focused on our overall well-being,” Amigable said.

The event will also include a pledge of sportsmanship and unity among participants.

The Ilocos Sur Pride Month celebration culminates on June 29 at 3:00 PM in front of the Provincial Capitol.

The closing festivities will feature a Pride March Advocacy Parade, a Runway Show, and a Neon Rave Party. (AMB/ATV/VGS/PIA Ilocos Sur)
