ZAMBOANGA CITY, April 19 (PIA) – In anticipation of the influx of tourists in the city this summer, the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) held a 3-day Tourism Awareness Seminar for Tourist-Oriented Police for Community Order and Protection at the Garden Orchid Hotel beginning Tuesday (April 18).

The seminar equips tourist police with additional knowledge on tourist protection, safety and security.

According to Police Regional Office 9 Deputy Regional Director for Operations PSSupt. Narciso Verdadero, “the activity is an enhancement program towards improving the capabilities of our men in the field,” especially during tourist influx season such as these summer months.

He added that the seminar will capacitate the police to thwart any security threats against tourists, particularly abduction especially of foreigners.

Meanwhile, PSSupt. Verdadero added that the police are on alert 24/7 not only in providing security to tourists, but the residents in general.

He advised tourists and travelers to “keep in touch with your police when planning to visit tourist destinations so we could provide you with the necessary security.”

On the other hand, DOT consultant and former regional director Ricardo San Juan said that in addition to providing security for tourists, the police will also be trained to be knowledgeable tourist guides. (ALT/FDM/PIA9-Zamboanga City, with reports from Kimberly Yusay and Zhara V. Paking OJT)
