QUEZON CITY, March 21 (PIA)--The Department of Labor & Employment (DOLE) reiterated its call to all business establishments and companies in the country to strictly enforce the implementation of occupational safety and health standards.
Labor Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III enjoined the officers, new fellows, and diplomates, including the attendees of the Philippine College of Occupational Medicine’s (PCOM) 39th Annual National Convention held over the weekend at the Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria, Quezon City.
“Your theme, “Healthy Workforce: Advancing PCOM’s Action for Change,” proves of your readiness to confront the changing climate of occupational safety. This convention is an excellent opportunity to be updated on the changes and the emerging challenges in the practice of occupational medicine here and abroad,” Bello said.
The labor chief also encouraged the 11 fellow and 39 diplomate PCOM graduates to campaign for the strict enforcement of DOLE policies and programs that will ensure workers safety, welfare, and rights on their respective workplace.
DOLE, through its Labor Laws Compliance System (LLCS), has intensified its programs on OSH standards by instructing companies to voluntarily comply with the rules and regulations and through information and dissemination drive to various companies.
“We in DOLE believe that PCOM is our partner in protecting the occupational safety of Filipino workers. We aim to prevent workplace accidents, such as the fire incidents at Kentex slipper factory in Valenzuela and at the House Technology Industries (HTI) in Cavite,” Bello added.
DOLE has recently issued Administrative Order No. 21, which constitutes a technical working group that will review workplace occupational safety and health standards to ensure compliance of companies with labor laws and social legislations.
Dr. Edmyr Macabulos, MD, PCOM National President; DOH Assec. Eric Tayag; and Bureau of Working Conditions (BWC) Director Ma. Teresita S. Cucueco, who is also a board of director of PCOM, were also among the guests on the annual convention. (DOLE/RJB/SDL/PIA-NCR)
