BASCO, Batanes, March 9 (PIA) - - The only operating airstip in this island-town was renamed 'Jorge Abad Airport' through a resolution passed by the local council here.
The resolution specifies that the change of name is in honor of Jorge Abad, who was then the Secretary of Public Works in 1955, the first Ivatan cabinet member.
Abad, the father of former congressman and former budget and management Secretary Florencio Butch Abad, was instrumental to the fund sourcing for the construction of the airstrip.
Ivatan historians claimed that the airstrip was also constructed through a collaborative effort of the locals in leveling the hilly land manually using crowbars and hoes as there were no contractors and heavy equipment that could reach their place that time.
