Zamboanga City, Apr. 28 (PIA) -- To underscore the importance of forests in the survival of human race, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) launched yesterday the National Year of Forests (NYF).
With the theme “Forests for people,” the launching hopes to convey the message that people and forests has synergetic relationship wherein forests provide benefits to man and man must care for forests to continue being recipient of its benefits, says DENR Chief Information Officer Roservirico Tan in a press statement.
Quoting DENR Secretary Ramon J. P Paje, Tan said “the launching of the NYF is an offshoot of Presidential Proclamation No. 125 signed by President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III on March 15 as the country’s way of lending its support to the United Nations (UN) declaration of 2011 as the International Year of Forests (IYF).“
The press statement reads, “In the proclamation order, President Aquino said the declaration of 2011 as NYF is in support of the government’s five-year reforestation plan, the “National Greening Program.”
The same press statement further reads, “Proclamation 125 is an opportunity for President Aquino to highlight its resolve to move ahead in writing a new, brighter chapter in Philippine environmentalism.” (JPA/ PIA9-Zambo Norte)
