MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur, Feb. 20 (PIA) -- The Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao government has forged a partnership with the Mindanao State University (MSU) to rehabilitate the critical watersheds in the province.
The partnership was formalized last week with the signing of a memorandum of agreement (MoA) between the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in the region represented by its Secretary Kahal Kedtag and the MSU administration represented by its President Macapado Muslim.
The MoA involves the establishment of forest tree nurseries and facilities to answer the 500,000 required number of seedlings to cover the 856 hectares of forest land in the province in line with the National Greening Program (NGP) of the government.
A flagship program of President Benigno S. Aquino III, the NGP involves the planting and growing of 1.5 billion seedlings in 1.5 million hectares of public lands nationwide in six years, from 2011 to 2016.
The program also aims to improve water quality in rivers and irrigation for farm lands, reduce the potential for flooding, absorb carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, and lay the foundation for an expanded wood-products economy. (APB-PIA 10)
