BINMALEY, Pangasinan, June 12 (PIA) -- The observance of the 114th anniversary of Philippine independence pushed through in this town this morning despite the rainy weather.

Mayor Lorenzo Cerezo cited the Independence Day celebration as one of the biggest holidays in the country have to be celebrated, rain or shine, since it displays that "we own a strong nation because we have our independence."

The celebration started at exactly 8:00 a.m. with the raising of the Philippine flag in front of the municipal hall. Local officials, municipal employees, Philippine National Police (PNP) personnel, educators and war veterans solemnly sang the national anthem.

The singing of the Pangasinan hymn and the Binmaley hymn came next. It was followed by the ceremonial laying of wreath or floral offering at the foot of Dr. Jose Rizal’s monument, located near the municipal hall.

A day before this ceremony, flaglets were hung in the lampposts within the town proper to remind the public of this significant occasion.

Independence Day relives the proclamation of freedom from the Spanish colonial rule that gave the country and its people the liberty they enjoy up to this day. (JCR/AMM-PIA 1 Pangasinan)
