3 Cities vie for Presidential Search for Child-Friendly City in NCR

QUEZON, July 4, (PIA) -- The Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC) received 3 entries for the 2012 Presidential Search for Child-Friendly Municipalities and Cities in the National Capital Region (NCR). Vying for title are the cities of Mandaluyong, Makati and Pasig City.

Mandaluyong is the 2011 regional and national title holder for the Most Child-Friendly City in the highly urbanized city category. Makati is 3 times regional title holder while Pasig City has once aspired for the title.

The Regional Awards Committee (RAC) composed of focal persons from different government agencies and non-government organizations led by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)and chaired by the Philippine Information Agency-NCR is doing the rounds of validation.

Areas to be validated are functional committees for children, budget allocation and utilization for children, programs and services for children, community and children participation in governance both in the city and in the barangay level.

The validation rounds and the deliberation for the regional winner are scheduled this month. Announcement of the regional winner will be this coming August.

The national awards committee will then validate short-listed entries and the announcement and awarding of national winner will be on October at the Malacañang Palace as culminating activity of the Children’s Month.

The Presidential Award is conferred to deserving local government units in recognition of their vital role in promoting children’s rights to survival, development, protection and participation as well as in ensuring child-friendly governance. (LFB/RJB/PIA-NCR)
