Manila launches 'Barangay Power 2012'
QUEZON CITY, July 10 (PIA) -- The City of Manila launches today "Barangay Power 2012" aimed at clinching for the city the record of having the cleanest and greenest barangay.
Barangay Power 2012 recognizes barangays which maintain and sustain cleanliness in their areas and implement a systematic and comprehensive ecological solid waste management program to ensure the protection of public health and the environment.
Mayor Alfredo Lim and Metro Manila Manila Development Authority (MMDA) general manager Cora Jimenez and other city officials led the launching that was also attended by volunteers who will help make the program a success.
At least 168 volunteers comprising of senior citizens and women's group have volunteered to assist in the project, cleaning up the barangays in the areas of Quezon Boulevard, Claro M. Recto, Oroquieta, and Avenida Rizal.
During the launch, held at Barangay 310, Sta. Cruz, Lim called on all barangays to strictly observe the proper segregation and disposal of wastes to ensure that they do not end up clogging the drainage.
Lim also said that the city government will also be planting some fruit-bearing trees in the area as part of its greening program.
The mayor has consistently called on all barangays to regularly clean their surroundings, not only to vie for the record of being the cleanest and greenest but for their own sake, saying that a clean barangay will keep its residents away from all kinds of illnesses, like dengue caused by mosquitoes that thrive in stagnant waters.
