OCD to conduct simultaneous earthquake drill on Mar. 1

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Feb 5 (PIA) – The Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) region 2 has announced the conduct of the 2012 1st quarter simultaneous earthquake drill on March 1, 2012 nationwide through the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (RDRRMC).
 
OCD Regional Director Norma C. Talosig, council chair, said the country is beset with calamities and disasters such earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and other geological hazards, owing to its location in the “Pacific Ring of Fire.”  This is why it is very vital to prepare and always remind the public on the proper actions to save lives during earthquakes.
 
Talosig said region 2 is not free from earthquakes and there have been recorded major earthquakes in the past which caused loss lives and properties.
 
“Preparedness and mitigation are strategies in reducing disaster risks pursuant to the new law that is why we need to prepare for the simultaneous earthquake drill which will be conducted on March 1,” Talosig said.
 
As of now, Talosig said the council is on the process of selecting one major area to conduct the regional drill to demonstrate the proper response during earthquakes, especially those living or working in high buildings.
 
Talosig also urged all agencies, schools and local disaster councils to conduct earthquake safety drill in their respective areas of responsibility to saturate information and education campaign to the public. (TCB/OTB/PIA 2)
