LGU-Basco holds walkathon to celebrate Nutrition Month
BASCO, Batanes, July 13 -- The local government unit (LGU) of Basco has held a walkathon (walk for a purpose) around the Basco oval in celebration of the Nutrition Month.
Participants comprising 320 municipal officials and employees, Basco police and Department of Environment and Natural Resources staff did a 10-round brisk walk on the 400-meter Basco oval.
Ballgames-- dodge ball for women and volleyball for both men and women-- followed the walkathon event.
A biggest weight loser competition was also launched as part of nutrition month. This challenges the overweight and obese to control their intake of food, with consideration on volume, frequency and kind of food.
LGU Basco maintains its weekly physical fitness program every Wednesday afternoon, through ballgames and running events.
According to a 64-year-old municipal government employee, last year LGU Basco walked through the three barangays of Basco up to the eastern farms, then along the Japanese tunnels through Tukon, south of Basco, and down to the marine sanctuary (west of Basco). This is equal to the distance covered by walkathon participants this year (400 meters multiplied by 10). (NGA/PIA 2, Batanes)
