Trece Martires City to implement 'No to plastic campaign'
TRECE MARTIRES CITY, Cavite, April 30 (PIA) -- The City Government will implement tomorrow, May 1 an ordinance prohibiting the use of plastic bags in buying and purchasing goods and regulating the latter's use in the wet and dry market.
City Ordinance 2011-200 or the Plastic Bags and Styrofoam Reduction Ordinance specifically mentioned that plastics and Styrofoam can only be used as packaging for frozen and wet goods.
City officials are encouraging all their constituents to follow the said decree and use environment-friendly materials like paper bags, eco-bags or personal cloth bags when doing shopping in the market and other similar places.
On the other hand, business establishment owners and operators were already informed in advance regarding the full implementation of the ordinance as this was given a six-month period before its effectivity.
The ordinance which was passed by the city council and approved by Mayor Melandres De Sagun last year penalized the violators, individuals and business establishment owners and operators with fines ranging from P1,000 to P5,000 or imprisonment of not more than six months and cancellation of business license for the latter.
De Sagun is encouraging business establishments and the community to regulate and eventually ban the sale and use of plastic bags including Styrofoam as this will protect the environment and will minimize the clogging of waterways and canals. De Sagun also urged them to produce eco-friendly materials for the shopping needs of their customers. (Ruel Francisco PIA4A-Cavite/TMC PIO)
