Dengue claims 6 victims in Aklan

KALIBO, Aklan, June 22 (PIA) -- A report from the Provincial Health Office (PHO) here revealed that six Aklanons died of dengue from the January to June 9 of this year.

Of the six deaths, two each were from Kalibo and Ibajay, and one each from New Washington and Malay.

From January to June 9, the PHO has listed a total of 179 dengue cases admitted at various hospitals in Aklan, with eight of these coming from nearby provinces.

Two of the reported deaths were said to have been brought to Iloilo City and died there, according to medical officials of the PHO here.

Of the dengue cases, Kalibo had the highest number of victims for the period with 60, followed by Numancia with 16 (an adjacent town just across the Kalibo Bridge), Ibajay and Malay with 15 each, and Banga with 12.

The rest of the towns had single-digit number of dengue cases.

For the said period, the month of May had the highest number of cases with 61, followed by March with 35, February with 28; June 1-9, with 16; and January, 15.

With the increasing number of dengue cases in Aklan, the health officials called on Aklanons to clean their surroundings and cover water containers to prevent dengue-carrying mosquitoes from multiplying.

The PHO also called on parents not to take fever for granted, and to bring their children to hospitals or clinics once they had fever for three or more days. (JCM/VGV PIA 6 Aklan)
