Two gov’t offices team to clean environment
TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte, June 22 (PIA) -- Two government offices are coordinating for a clean environment and for healthy bodies in all elementary public and private schools in Tacloban City. Not only will school perimeters be cleaned up but so too the rivers adjacent to it.
Mary Phoebe Quiban, head of the health and nutrition unit of the Department of Education (DepEd) City Division said that the city education division has tied up with the Department of Health (DOH) City Health Office (CHO) on the advocacy for maintaining low rate of dengue cases in the city of Tacloban through the said activities.
Quiban said that aside from the clean-ups which will be done on a quarterly basis, the city health office will also be involved in the campaign for filariasis awareness. DOH is targeting for the elimination of the lymphatic filariasis in the region.
The filariasis disease is endemic in some parts of the region being mosquito borne. As a health measure against the disease, DOH will be conducting a massive treatment or mass drag administration in the elementary public and private schools. A healthy environment will lessen or eliminate the cases of dengue and filariasis, which in turn will assure a healthy student population. (PIA-8)
