CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro (PIA) – At least 111 applicants took the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) MIMAROPA’s second Regular Radio Operators’ Examination on October 19, 2024, at the City College of Calapan.
Lawyer Donald Jude H. Joya, NTC MIMAROPA Regional Information Officer, said that there were 141 applicants, but only 111 attended and finished the examination.
The test aimed to determine whether these prospective amateurs or upgrading amateurs are qualified for the privileges conveyed by a license or certificate, crucial in ensuring that every amateur thoroughly understands the responsibilities and skills needed to operate radio stations in the amateur radio service.
The examination covered the rules, procedures, and technical materials that an amateur should know to operate a station properly.
“A candidate must obtain an average of 70 percent to pass the examination required for a class of amateur license provided that a rating of not less than 50 percent is received for any of the NTC-prescribed elements for each class of amateur,” Joya said.
The NTC regularly conducts these exams as part of its mandate to regulate the country’s telecommunications, ensuring that radio frequencies are used efficiently and legally.

Joya said those who will pass the examination are eligible to apply for a Radio Amateur Operator Certificate (RAOC) and/or Amateur Radio Station License (ARSL), which are both a written authority to own and/or operate amateur radio for the period specified therein.
Before operating certain types of radios, such as two-way radios (e.g. handheld or mobile transceivers) or amateur radios, one must take an exam and obtain a license from the NTC.
The NTC regulates the use of radio frequencies to ensure proper operation and avoid interference with other communication services.
Joya encouraged all who possess radios to undergo examination for legal purposes.
