ANGELES CITY (PIA) — The celebration of the 125th anniversary of Philippine Independence and Nationhood in Angeles City honored the national heroes and the new unsung heroes.
In his message during the flag-raising and wreath-laying rites at the Museum of Philippine Social History, Mayor Carmelo Lazatin Jr. highlighted that the celebration remembers the city’s debt to the national and unsung heroes of Angeles City who offered their lives to the country so that citizens may relish freedom.
“They are the government workers who are risking their safety to ensure that our service to the Angeleños will continue even in these trying times of COVID-19 pandemic— from our health workers who are in the frontline, to our workers who are working in the government,” he said.
Mayor Lazatin added that what made them the city’s modern-day heroes is their dedication to prioritize the health and welfare of the residents more than taking care of their loved ones.
In addition, the local chief executive underscored that they served as the city government’s support to give true public service to Angelenos amidst the health and economic crisis.
“I salute all of you. I will never cease to tell the world that you are our heroes. I will never falter to say, from the bottom of my heart, that thank you very much to all of you… If not for you, we have lost the threat that is COVID-19, and I will not be able to govern in the midst of the pandemic,” he stated.

Mayor Lazatin pressed that it is right and just to celebrate the day of the country’s independence while remembering the heroes of history and the modern-day heroes who allowed the people to savor the real essence of freedom.
Meanwhile, Pampanga First District Representative Carmelo Lazatin II urged for the community’s collective efforts in embodying the bravery displayed by national heroes towards the improvement of the country.
“May all the heroes who helped the Philippines to be free be an inspiration to every one of us. Let us follow their steps so that we will be able to do more in helping our society. This may serve as a challenge to all of us… that we always put in mind the sake of many,” he added.
The lawmaker emphasized that attaining the country’s full freedom does not only lie in the hands of politicians, but also in the residents who will work towards change and development.
Known locally as the Pamintuan Mansion, the present-day Museum of Philippine Social History is the site of the first and only public independence day celebration under the administration of President Emilio Aguinaldo in 1899.
The 125th anniversary of Philippine Independence and Nationhood carries the theme “Kalayaan.Kinabukasan.Kasaysayan.”
The multi-year celebration highlights the birth of the Filipino nation from the proclamation of Philippine independence on June 12, 1898 in Kawit, Cavite until the end of the first Filipino government that lasted until the capture of President Emilio Aguinaldo in Palanan, Isabela on March 23, 1901.
