15 persons deprived of liberty in Occidental Mindoro to finish basic education

SAN JOSE, Occidental Mindoro (PIA) – At least 15 Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) in Mamburao District Jail will complete their basic education through the Alternative Learning System (ASL) Program.

The ALS program is an initiative of the Department of Education (DepEd) to provide basic education to people who do not have or cannot access formal education, such as PDLs, to receive and complete elementary and high school through an alternative education that fits their situations.

In partnership with the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), the program is extended to PDLs to help them prepare for community reintegration and rehabilitation, increasing their chances of finding employment upon completing their sentence, said BJMP MIMAROPA Regional Information Officer Joefrie Anglo.

“As agents of change, we are committed [to] providing PDLs under our care with knowledge and skills that they can use to rebuild their lives and contribute to society once they are reintegrated into the communities,” JO1 Walter Lapore, an ASL implementer said.

The DepEd and BJMP recently inked a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), strengthening their partnership to provide enhanced educational access for PDLs through ALS, Anglo said. (DSG/PIA MIMAROPA – Occidental Mindoro)
