155 Bacnotan tobacco farmers receive modern equipment

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union (PIA) – To enhance agricultural productivity and farmer resilience, the local government of Bacnotan, La Union provided modern farming equipment to 155 tobacco farmers across 17 barangays.

The turnover ceremony, held on Feb. 4 in Barangay Bacsil, is part of the local government’s efforts to lower production costs, increase efficiency, and promote sustainable farming practices.

The project was funded under Republic Act No. 7171, also known as An Act to Promote the Development of Farmers in the Virginia Tobacco-Producing Provinces, which supports agricultural development in Virginia tobacco-producing provinces.

Modern equipment to improve farming efficiency

To address irrigation challenges, the local government distributed 129 rolls of 1-inch diameter garden hoses, ensuring better water management for crops.

Farmers also received 100 knapsack sprayers to facilitate the efficient application of fertilizers and pesticides, while 70 rolls of black plastic mulch were provided to help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.

To improve post-harvest processes, 189 steel drums were distributed for safe water and chemical storage.

Additionally, to boost mechanization, farmers received 10 multi-cultivators for land preparation and maintenance.

The local government also distributed five 4-wheel drive tractors, complete with accessories and implements, to enhance land cultivation and overall farming efficiency.

Strengthening agricultural and economic growth

Mayor Divina Fontanilla emphasized the municipal government’s commitment to empowering farmers through innovation and technology.

“Our goal is to empower our farmers by providing them with the tools they need to thrive. By investing in modern farming equipment, we are not only easing their workload but also ensuring a more productive and sustainable agricultural future for Bacnotan,” Fontanilla stated.

She also encouraged farmers to explore mariculture (marine farming) and other alternative livelihood programs to supplement their income.

Thankful farmers support

For many farmers, this initiative marks a turning point in their agricultural journey.

Rodolfo Pajarit, Jr. from Barangay Oya-oy, shared how access to modern tools will significantly impact his livelihood.

“In my many years of farming, this is the first time I’ve been given the opportunity to use such modern tools. It brings great relief to us farmers and our families,” he said.

Collaboration for sustainable agriculture

The Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO) spearheaded the equipment distribution in partnership with barangay officials and farmer organizations.

This initiative aligns with Bacnotan’s broader agricultural modernization program, ensuring farmers receive not just equipment but also long-term support.

By equipping local farmers with modern tools and innovative solutions, the municipality aims to create a more resilient and prosperous agricultural community. (CCMT/KJCR,PIA La Union)
