2 Capiz children’s books among ‘must read’ tales in 2025

ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA) — Two of the “Ilawod: Five Children’s Book Set” produced under the Lunsod Lunsad Project of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) made it to the top 25 must read books this year.

This was disclosed by DTI Capiz director Ken Queenie Cuñada, citing an online article of the InquirerPlus last Jan. 3.

“We are proud to share the information that the published books from Capiz are included in the list,” Cuñada said.

These are the “Kapid” (twin), authored by Roxas City Tourism Officer Dr. Bryan Mari Argos, and “Lin-ay: Ang Una ng Babaylan” by Capiz State University Public Information Officer Christian George Acevedo.

Argos is a two-time Palanca Award winner and Ilawod children’s book project director.

Kapid is a family tale and a story about the bond of siblings on a fantastical journey to the Capiz shores where deities come alive and pieces of the moon become the shell associated with the province.

On the other hand, the Lin-ay tale, in English and Hiligaynon narrative, takes the readers to the mystic world of prehistoric Panay, and the shaman women revered for their wisdom and spiritual power.

The book set also includes “Biyahe ni Paul”, which re-imagines the mythical origins of Roxas City’s sole island barangay of Olotayan; “Akon Balay”, which is a whimsical yet contemporary tale that captures the essence of home and belonging that is set against the picturesque shores of the city; and “Ang Dalaga nga May Madakmul nga Dapa-dapa”, a story of a girl with mysteriously thick soles as her community navigates both the wrath and the blessings of a Visayan deity.

The Capiceños-authored books were launched last December as part of the Sinadya Festival 2024. (AGP/AAL/PIA Capiz)
