MISAMIS OCCIDENTAL (PIA) — A total of 366 chess players from across the Philippines participated in the 2nd Gov. Henry S. Oaminal Open Chess Tournament, held on July 9–10 at the Aya Hotel and Residences in Clarin, here.

He also noted that the chess festival coincides with the 76th charter anniversary of the city of Ozamiz. “As we embark on this tournament, I hope that you will all enjoy the experience. Let this event be a celebration of not just competition but also of building camaraderie,” he added.
Mayor Oaminal emphasized the broader impact of such competitions, saying, “With these competitions, we’re exposing our children and community to the skills of seasoned athletes from outside our locality.” This ensures a cultivated interest in sports and helps develop character. Through sports tourism, we not only enhance local sports but also promote our province and city. Competitors from different areas will get the chance to appreciate the beauty of Misamis Occidental and Ozamiz City.”
He encouraged participants to enjoy not only the chess games, but also the camaraderie and fellowship with fellow chess enthusiasts. He also invited them to visit the numerous tourist attractions in Misamis Occidental.
Eugenio “Eugene” Torre, Asia’s first chess grandmaster and Hall of Famer, was an invited guest at the tournament.
“On behalf of Philippine Chess, I am pleased with the support from our officials, led by Governor Henry Oaminal, Mayor Indy Oaminal, and Congressman Ando Oaminal. Their cooperation and planned efforts are commendable,” Torre said.
He emphasized the importance of parental involvement in children’s engagement with chess and the role of self-discipline. Torre also encouraged the players to apply the life lessons learned from chess.
The tournament was formally opened with ceremonial moves performed by Gov. Oaminal, Mayor Oaminal, and Grandmaster Eugene Torre. Misamis Occidental is currently at the forefront of the Filipino chess scene. This event is part of Ozamiz City’s 76th Charter Anniversary, as well as the Feast of the Blessed Birhen sa Cotta.
