39th GSP encampment set in Negros Oriental

DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental (PIA) — Over 1,000 junior and senior cadet girl scouts from Negros Oriental and Siquijor are expected to participate in the 39th encampment on Jan. 30 to Feb. 2 at Camp Lily I. Gamo in Sibulan town.

Conducted by the Girl Scouts of the Philippines (GSP) Negros Oriental and Siquijor Council, this year’s encampment banners the theme, “Women of Today for the Girls of Tomorrow.”

The activity aims to promote the preparedness of young learners to do useful things for themselves and others.

GSP National Membership Committee chair Dr. Fe Violeta Taring said they expect the girls to experience the learning in the outdoors and prepare them for a better tomorrow.

“Our girls need to come up with the chores, they have to know like cooking, arts and crafts, self defense, team-building, and lot more activities are being prepared for them. Rest assured that we are coming up with interesting and beautiful activities for our girls,” said Taring.

This is also to inculcate in the youth the value of patriotism and encourage their involvement in public and civic affairs.

“The girls will be trained in scout craft and to teach them patriotism, courage, self-reliance, and kindred virtues,” added Taring.

Cadet Girl Scout Fea Jammeah Dini-ay, 22, from Silliman University and a council board member and council young adult representative of Negros Oriental-Siquijor GSP Council, expressed excitement for the second council camp after the pandemic.

“I am expecting to meet new friends because I will be one of central staff for this camp. And we are also looking forward for fun activities and I hope other girl scouts will look forward as well,” said Fea.

The campers will be divided into the Junior or Elementary level, Senior or High School level and Cadet or the College category.

Activities lined up during the event include Larung Pinoy, obstacle games, disaster preparedness, martial arts, basics of first aid and fire safety drills, campfire, talent night, among others.

“We know that camping is the lifeblood of scouting and we hope that in this out of doors experience we will be able to reach our goal with enthusiasm, to be empowered for a better leadership that you will have in the days to come,” said Taring.

The encampment activity is held with the assistance of the Department of Education, Provincial Health Office, Philippine National Police (PNP), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Philippine Information Agency (PIA), Municipal Government of Sibulan, Department of Public Works and Highways, among others.
