BANGUED, Abra (PIA) — Five students in Abra qualified for the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) undergraduate scholarship grant for 2024.
The students signed the scholarship agreement and took the scholars oath during their orientation at the Provincial Science and Technology Office (PSTO) on July 9.
Jasmine Lei M. Yabes, a scholar from Luba, Abra, is happy for the opportunity to become a grantee of the educational assistance that promotes science and technology courses.
“Ang maging scholar ng DOST is parang kayo ‘yung inaasahan sa mga research na makakatulong sa overall development ng country. That makes me feel proud kasi parang privilege to be a part of this program,” she said.
Yabes who will be taking BS in Medical Technology at the University of Northern Philippines (UNP) committed to study hard and comply with the requirements to keep the scholarship until she finishes her education.
Another grantee, Joza Leigh A. De Guzman from Manabo, Abra, thanked the DOST for the scholarship. She shared that she came to know about the grant through her teacher who was also a former scholar.
“Makaluwagluwag sa financial po kasi tatlo po kaming college students. Just the idea na matulungan ko po yung parents ko and maka-graduate and matulugan ko po yung isa pa pong kapatid ko,” she said.
De Guzman who will be taking BS Psychology at the UNP encouraged her fellow Abrenian youth to apply to the DOST-SEI scholarship and avail of its benefits.
DOST-Cordillera Scholarship Unit Project Technical Specialist Grangery Agtulao disclosed that the Cordillera is number four nationwide in terms of top performing students.
“Of the 10,756 scholars, the Cordillera has 201 qualifiers including the five scholars from Abra,” she bared.
Meanwhile, Abra PSTO Director Ralf Sapi-il said that having DOST-SEI scholars means a lot for the province. He emphasized the value of the educational grant and the important role of students in the development of the country as a whole.
“Maysa nga dawaten mi nga agcomply tayo kadagiti requirements tapno haan nga ma-cut dagidiay scholarship privelages. Dakayo ti maysa nga patunay nga adunto ti research, dagiti innovation nga aramiden yo. Dawaten mi nga ipapatiyo ti panag-eskwela yo,” he urged.

The DOST-SEI Scholarship Program aims to support young and talented Filipinos to pursue careers in the field of Science and Technology towards national progress.
Under the program, scholars will receive financial assistance for tuition and other school fees up to P40,000 per academic year, P8,000 monthly living allowance, learning and connectivity allowance, clothing allowance, transportation allowance, and health insurance among others. (JJPM-PIA CAR, Abra)
