DAGUPAN CITY (PIA) — Around 62 third-year college students from the Ilocos Region, who qualified for the 2023 Junior Level Science Scholarship Program (JLSS) of the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI), will soon benefit from the said scholarship.
Bernalyn Martinez, project technical assistant I of DOST-Pangasinan, said that from the said number, 21 new scholars are from Pangasinan who passed the qualifying examination administered in various testing centers nationwide on August 27, 2023.
Martinez added that 18 students from Ilocos Norte also passed the examination while 15 and eight qualified from the provinces of La Union and Ilocos Sur, respectively.
She said for the regular academic year, qualifiers will enjoy scholarship privileges such as tuition and other school fees (for scholars enrolled in private higher education institutions); P7,000 monthly stipend; P1,000 clothing allowance; P10,000 learning materials and/or connectivity allowance; transportation allowance (for those studying outside of their home province); premium group accident and health insurance; P10,000 thesis allowance; and P1,000 graduation allowance.
She added that for the mid-year term, qualifiers will get tuition and other school fees, learning materials and/or connectivity allowance amounting to P2,000, and a monthly living allowance of P7,000 per month for two months.
Martinez said the JLSS program, which aims to provide scholarships that will finance the education of talented and deserving students in their third year of college, is divided into three scholarship program categories namely Republic Act (R.A.) 7687 or the Science and Technology Undergraduate Scholarship program; R.A. 10612 or Act Expanding the Coverage of S&T scholarship; and the Merit Scholarship program.
She said from the 62 qualifiers, 16 students qualified under the Merit Scholarship, 26 under RA 7687, and 20 under the RA 10612 program.
She added that aside from the 62 qualified students, there are 14 more potential qualifiers, whose names are not included in the published list but are under consideration and have pending resubmission of requirements for further evaluation.
“Pasado sila sa exam pero may lacking documents, so mag-qualify lang sila if approved ang revalidation ng documents nila,” Martinez clarified.

She added that Pangasinan qualifiers may also visit the DOST-Provincial Science and Technology Office located at Alvear East Street in Lingayen town or the DOST-Field Office in Urdaneta City located at the Pangasinan State University (PSU)-Urdaneta Campus.
