76th Fil Am Golf tourney gathers 1,400 players; boosts tourism in Baguio

BAGUIO CITY (PIA) — The biggest and longest-running amateur golf tournament in the Asia Pacific region  kicks off in Baguio City with more than 1,000 players participating.

The 73rd Januarius Fil-Am Golf Invitational had its ceremonial  tee  off at both the Baguio Country Club and Camp John Hay golf courses on Friday, November 24, 2023.

Present during the ceremonial tee off were Rodel Mangulabaan from the Januarius Holdings Inc., Fil-Am Board of Trustees Ely Lagman, Jose Roman Ozaeta and Freddie Mendoza with Fil-Am Co Chairs Jude Eustaquio and Anthony De Leon and Baguio City Police Office Director PCol. Franciso Bulwayan Jr. representing Mayor Benjamin Magalong.

Baguio Country Club Client and Member Relations Manager Andrew Pinero said this year’s tournament recorded the highest number of players with more than 1,400  from  252 teams.

Pinero  said the number of registered players this year, both foreign and local,  surpassed the 1,200 players who competed in the past staging of the tournament before the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said that the tournament is expected to boost  the tourism industry in the city of Baguio with the expected arrival of family members and other visitors joining the players who would be playing in the two golf courses in Baguio City in the next two weeks.

The seniors division will be played from November 24 to 30 while regular division is set from December 2 to 10, 2023.

This  year’s tournament is sponsored by the Januarius Holdings Incorporated  founded by  Januario Jesus Atencio.

Meanwhile, the FilAm Golf Foundation is also preparing for the charitable institutions and organizations that will benefit from the proceeds of the tournament. (RMC- PIA CAR)
