QUEZON CITY, (PIA) — For decades, the iconic jeepney has served as the backbone of Philippine public transportation. But times are changing, and the need for cleaner, more efficient alternatives is becoming increasingly clear. That’s where Francisco Motors comes in, offering a game-changing solution: electric jeepneys for less than P1 million per unit.
This revolutionary development is a major breakthrough for the country’s transportation sector. Priced at a third of the market rate, Francisco Motors’ e-jeepneys make sustainable transportation accessible to more operators and drivers, paving the way for a greener future.
Elmer Francisco, the company’s owner, emphasizes the affordability factor: “We decided to slash the price so that operators and jeepney drivers can afford the unit as part of the government’s modernization program.”
With the first completed unit expected by mid-2024, the future of Filipino transportation looks bright. The design retains the familiar jeepney look, but with modern upgrades, including air conditioning and a more efficient electric drivetrain. This ensures a comfortable and environmentally friendly ride for passengers, as well as a significant cost-saving for drivers and operators. It will have 11 seats each on both sides and room for eight standing passengers, for a total of 30 passengers.
The potential impact of this innovative solution is already generating excitement. Hundreds of transport cooperatives have expressed interest, including the CAZANOVA Transport service cooperative. Chairperson Willy Tecson highlights the affordability factor: “We were attracted by the price difference between Francisco Motors’ electric jeep and modernized jeepneys, which cost more than P2 million each.”

This development also offers a welcome relief for transport groups who have been protesting the government’s jeepney modernization program. With the availability of affordable e-jeepneys, the transition toward a more sustainable future becomes less daunting and more achievable.
The Department of Transportation remains firm on its stand, emphasizing the need for consolidation for efficient and sustainable operations. However, they assure a “just transition” for all stakeholders, allowing roadworthy jeepneys to continue operating.
Francisco Motors’ e-jeepney is more than just a vehicle; it’s a symbol of progress and hope for a greener tomorrow. This affordable solution empowers operators and drivers, while contributing to cleaner air and a healthier environment for all Filipinos. With its innovative approach and commitment to sustainability, Francisco Motors is leading the charge towards a brighter future for Philippine transportation. (PIA-NCR)
