NANHS’ opens reading pantry for students.

SAN JUAN, Abra (PIA) –- Faculty and staff of Northern Abra National High School (NANHS) have recreated a way for students participate the National Reading Month celebration religiously. This is thru the establishment of a School ‘Reading Pantry’, where students get access to hundreds of books and references.

This was officially opened by the school on November 20 as one of the highlights of their participation to the National Reading Month. It was conceptualized by NANHS Teacher and School Information Officer Dante Z. Guzman with the supervision and guidance of NANHS Principal Brenda L. Bose.

The Reading Pantry, in contrast to conventional library setting, offers a comfortable lounge type environment that makes reading more accessible and appealing to students. It offers various books in different languages and other reference materials which benefit around 1,000 students.

Here’s the twist. To ensure that this project is not only for a show, the faculty will be giving recognition and cash prizes to students with most visits and reading logs in their pantry. The reading logs are in the form of reflection papers to also improve reading comprehension among the students.

“I-check namin ‘yong log bog where they input their book of choice, nakalagay din doon ‘yong chapter na binasa nila and most importantly, may personal reflection and lesson learned silang ilalagay as basis na talagang nagbasa sila,” Guzman said in an interview.

He explained that the students with the most logs from Grades 7 to 12 will be given  award and cash prize.

NANHS is one of the biggest high school institutions in the province of Abra. It caters to students not only from  San Juan,  but from from the neighboring municipalities of Tineg, Dolores and Lagayan as well.

The National Reading Month celebration with the theme; “PAGBASA: Pag-asa sa MATATAG na Kinabukasan,” urges all elementary and secondary public and private schools to actively participate as it will be beneficial for their learning. (JDP/CAGT- PIA CAR-Abra)
