ROSELLER T. LIM, Zamboanga Sibugay (PIA) – Elmer Abordonado, a former habal-habal driver from Roseller T. Lim, Zamboanga Sibugay, was left bedridden for nearly a year after a life-changing accident in 2021. The incident not only took away his livelihood, but also left him with the challenge of starting over.
Determined to rebuild his life, Abordonado sought assistance through the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS) program and began exploring potential livelihood opportunities.
His persistence eventually led him to the Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP), where he found the support needed to help him recover and start anew.
Over the months, Abordonado regularly visited the Social Welfare and Development Team (SWADT) office in Ipil town to follow up on his application. His dedication paid off in November 2022, when he was granted a Livelihood Assistance Grant (LAG) of Php 12,500.
Abordonado used the money to purchase 100 chicks, along with feed, vitamins, and other essentials, and through hard work, his flock grew to over 4,000 chickens per month, spread across five farming sites in nearby municipalities.
His business flourished, making him the top supplier of chicken in both Zamboanga City and Zamboanga Sibugay. In just two years, he was able to purchase a car and a wing van to expand his operations.
Today, Abordonado not only focuses on his own success but also on helping others. He has formed a group of 20 farmers, providing them with chicks, feed, and equipment to support their own poultry businesses.
I believe in sharing my blessings, and I want to help fellow farmers succeed just as I did,”Abordonado said.
Abordonado’s journey highlights the power of perseverance and support. With the help of the DSWD’s livelihood programs, he was able to rebuild his life and now, in turn, helps others.
