TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan – – The Philippine Army’s 5th Infantry Division Commander Major General Gulliver L. Señires expressed optimism about eliminating rebel groups operating in the Cagayan Valley Region by the end of this year and shifting their attention to territorial defense.
He said a significant reduction in insurgent activities is observed as per peace and security reports, leading to a relatively peaceful environment and proof that there are only a few remnants of the rebel groups operating in some parts of the region.
Señires said the Philippine Army remains committed to ensuring the security and development of Cagayan Valley, and he acknowledged the collaborative efforts of local government units and the community in promoting peace.
He also said two of the provinces in the region and some municipalities were already declared insurgency-free recently.
Señires also said the focus for the rest of the year will be on intelligence operations, engagement with local stakeholders, and reinforcing the presence of army units in the strategic locations to prevent any resurgence of insurgency.
“We convince those remaining members of the New Peoples Army to return to the folds of the law. We want to give them a chance. It is better to unite and support the government for sustainable peace and development,” Señires stated.
The commander also assured that his office would assist returnees who fear legal repercussions and incarceration.
“We are offering an alternative way for them to return to lawful society, alongside the benefits and programs provided by Task Force End Local Communist Armed Conflict,” he explained.
He also stressed that, if ever the left groups were to be eliminated, the soldiers could now focus on territorial defense which is the core mandate of the armed forces.
“Our effort on territorial defense is not because of the West Philippine Sea issue, it is the main mandate of the Armed Forces of the Philippines actually,” he stressed. (OTBV/MFJ/PIA Region 2)
