Agencies unite to bring ‘Starbooks’ to Ifugao schools for S&T learning boost

The Department of Science and Technology-Cordillera Administrative Region (DOST-CAR), the Department of Education (DepEd), and the Provincial Local Government Unit sign a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to bring STARBOOKS or Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosk Station to learning institutions in Ifugao.

LAGAWE, Ifugao (PIA) — In a significant move to enhance educational resources in the province, the Department of Science and Technology-Cordillera Administrative Region (DOST-CAR), the Department of Education, and the provincial local government unit recently signed a memorandum of agreement for the installation of STARBOOKS, or Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosk Station, at learning institutions in Ifugao.

This collaborative effort underscores the commitment of these agencies to advancing educational opportunities and promoting science literacy in Ifugao.

STARBOOKS is a digital library developed by the DOST that offers numerous benefits for students, including access to educational materials such as books, journals, and research papers, which are particularly valuable in remote areas like Ifugao where access to physical libraries is limited.

This digital library enhances learning through interactive learning modules and multimedia resources that cater to various learning styles, helping students grasp complex concepts more efficiently.

STARBOOKS can be accessed offline, offering a rich repository of thousands of digitized science and technology resources available in multiple formats, including text, video, and audio. These resources are organized into specially designed “pods” with a user-friendly interface, making it easy for educators and students to navigate and utilize.

A DOST team led by Reynaldo A. Morales and assisted by Supervising Science Research Specialist Don Ognayon installed Starbooks in 91 schools in the province from June 25 to 27, 2024.

Ognayon stated that the installation of STARBOOKS software in the schools aims to encourage students to pursue science-related courses and bridge the educational resource gap. This initiative promotes a culture of learning and innovation among students by providing them with access to valuable educational resources.

Schools Division Superintendent Gloria B. Buyao-ao said that with the digital library in their schools, they can improve the performance of their learners. She urged the teachers and learners to maximize their use and be innovative, as they are accountable for the use of the learning materials to improve the performance of the learners.

Gov. Jerry U. Dalipog assured the provincial government’s support for education.

Board Member Joseph J. Odan, for his part, noted that this project aims to make Ifugao globally competitive and on par with advancements in science and technology, addressing the struggles and challenges in far-flung areas. (FBR-PIA Ifugao)
