SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union (PIA) – The Don Eufemio F. Eriguel Memorial National High School (DEFEMNHS) in Barangay Consolacion, Agoo, La Union imparted the value of environmental preservation to children thru a tree planting activity that was participated by its students, its teaching and non-teaching personnel, and other stakeholders on December 6.
This is important as climate change continues to affect various areas in La Union and as searing heat perpetuate even in the latter months of the year, which have historically been chilly months.
Imparting this wisdom is even more important given that children will eventually inherit the environment that people try to preserve now, and safeguarding it today makes it better able to make an environment conducive to the people of tomorrow.
Narra trees are historically sturdy, providing both shelter from the sun and additional protection during storms and typhoons.
The endeavor successfully planted 30 coconut trees, and 20 narra trees, with coconut trees an important resource which can often survive calamities while narra trees are considered sturdy and strong, offering both shelter from the searing heat of the sun and additional protection for lives and structures during calamities such as storms.
DEFEMNHS school principal, Ms. Adela C. Libunao says that the activity is important not just because of how it can teach students the value of protecting the environment through planting trees but also because of its importance in calamity prevention through early environmental preservation.
“This activity is a testament to our desire to impart good environmental protection practices to the next generation who shall inherit the environment and the choices we do now to preserve our environment,” Libunao said.
The tree planting activity of the DEFEMNS is part of the Department of Education (DepEd) project dubbed DepEd’s 236,000 Trees – A Christmas Gift for the Children which pools together 47,678 DepEd schools throughout the country to ensure a green environment for the children of today and for future generations.
The nationwide tree planting activity aims to not just provide protection for the environment but also improve air quality and the overall ambience of the school, creating a school atmosphere conducive for students’ learning. (JCR/AMB/MJTAB/CCMT, PIA La Union)
