SAN PABLO CITY, Laguna—In line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to ensure public safety and order, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) apprehended a Japanese national allegedly linked to the notorious ‘Luffy’ gang in an operation conducted on Monday.
The suspect, identified as Sasaki Takashi, 43, was arrested by BI operatives in coordination with the Philippine National Police Intelligence Group (PNP-IG) and San Pablo City Police Station at a residence in San Pablo City, Laguna.
According to BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado, Takashi is an undesirable alien who poses a significant risk to public safety.
“Takashi is a fugitive from justice wanted by the Japanese government for theft and fraud, targeting vulnerable individuals,” said Viado. “His presence in the Philippines endangers our communities and undermines our commitment to maintaining security and order,” he added.
A Warrant of Arrest was issued against Takashi by the Tokyo Summary Court in January 2023 for violations of Japan’s Penal Code. Reports from the Japanese authorities indicate that he and his accomplices stole ATM cards and bank information from elderly victims by posing as law enforcement or finance officials conducting fake investigations.
Further investigations revealed that Takashi is allegedly a member of the ‘Luffy’ group, a notorious Japanese criminal syndicate reportedly operating telecom fraud and extortion schemes in the Philippines.
“This arrest underscores the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies in protecting the public from transnational crimes,” added Viado. “We will continue to strengthen our partnerships with both local and international agencies to ensure that the Philippines does not become a haven for fugitives,” he stated.
The suspect will be transferred to the Bureau of Immigration Warden Facility (BIWF) and will remain there prior to deportation. (BI)
