Antique celebrates National Disability Rights Week

SAN JOSE, Antique (PIA)– The province of Antique celebrated the 2024 National Disability Rights Week (NDRW) with a program and gathering of persons with disabilities at the Evelio B. Javier Gymnasium, Binirayan Sports Complex, San Jose de Buenavista recently.

Keynote speaker lawyer Ma. Rowena E. Guanzon, in a video message, urged everyone to continue recognizing and upholding the rights of persons with disabilities, highlighting the importance of ongoing advocacy and support for their inclusion and equality in all aspects of society.

She further lauded the initiative of the local disability affairs office in bringing to the frontline the talents and activities of persons with disabilities.

Governor Rhodora J. Cadiao, in her message, reiterated her commitment to supporting the sector of persons with disabilities stating that no Antiqueño should be left behind. 

“Every Antiqueño should have equal rights, including those with special needs,” she said.

Provincial Social Welfare and Development Officer Lazaro G. Petinglay reported about 18,000 individuals registered as persons with disabilities in the province. 

Other local officials also supported the event including Vice Governor Edgar Denosta and some Sangguniang Panlalawigan members.

The activity also featured the oath-taking ceremony of the officers of the Persons with Disabilities-Solo Parent Association and the LGBTQ+ Association.

In addition, ten persons with disabilities were honored as heroes from different municipalities, and one family was recognized as the Natatanging Pamilya of a person with disability (Outstanding PWD Family).

Some individuals also received food packs and talking watches, particularly for visually impaired students.

 

This year’s celebration of National Disability Rights Week formerly called National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week was under Proclamation No. 597, S. 2024, issued by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., directing all government instrumentalities to celebrate the NDRW from July 17 to 23 every year.

This initiative ensures the full and equal enjoyment of human rights by persons with disabilities, celebrating their abilities and contributions while emphasizing inclusion, equality, and accessibility.
