SAN JOSE, Antique (PIA) — With extreme heat raising the risk of bush fires, the Antique Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) has formulated response plans for heat-related illnesses, water shortages, and other climate-related challenges.
The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) warned residents about the increased risk of bush fires and urged them to follow safety precautions, particularly when disposing of cigarettes in backyards.
PDRRMC Vice Chairperson Lazaro Petinglay and PDRRM Officer Broderick Train said government and private sector members are working together to address these concerns.
The Department of Science and Technology cautioned the public about heat exhaustion and stroke due to the rising heat index in Western Visayas. The Philippine National Police (PNP) is also implementing measures to ensure community safety during the summer months.
The Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) allocated 22 million pesos for the Local Adaptation to Water Access (LAWA) and Breaking Insufficiency through Nutritious Harvest for the Impoverished (BINHI) projects, aimed at improving water reservoirs, water systems, and community gardens.

The San Jose Waterworks Service Cooperative extended its operating hours from 18-20 to 22-23 hours to meet increased water demands, with all seven pumping stations operating above normal levels.
The Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) is mobilizing local governments to report heat-related illnesses. IPHO also reported a 420.35 percent surge in dengue cases compared to last year, with 895 cases and three deaths recorded from Jan. 1 to March 15. The IPHO is also monitoring 13 leptospirosis cases, including one death.
The Provincial Veterinary Office is conducting vitamin supplementation and vaccinations for livestock and pets. The Provincial Agriculturist is monitoring crops and fisheries, advising farmers and fisherfolk on risk mitigation.
The PDRRMC is also monitoring coastal areas, as the Amihan monsoon poses risks to fishermen, with reports of missing persons due to strong currents. (PSM/PIA Antique with reports from MCL/Antique PIO)
