Archbishop: New pontiff humble servant, committed to Pope Francis’ mission

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan (PIA) — Archbishop Ricardo L. Baccay of Tuguegarao, Cagayan has expressed deep gratitude and renewed hope following the election of the new pontiff, describing Pope Leo XIV as a humble servant committed to continuing the pastoral legacy of Pope Francis — a Church that listens, walks with the people, and serves with compassion.

“We waited for this. We prayed a lot for this. And now we were answered. I am thankful on behalf of the people who have been praying for this,” Baccay said.

He emphasized the continuity between the new pope’s mission and that of his predecessor, noting the pontiff’s focus on reaching out to the poor and marginalized, and his call for a more inclusive and compassionate Church.

Baccay was moved by the pope’s first public appearance, describing it as a moment marked by humility and quiet strength.

“So lowly, so humble… and immediately, he spoke about peace and hope — a message we all need, especially in these times,” he said.

He also highlighted the symbolic importance of the pope beginning his ministry during the Easter season and within the “Year of Hope” initiated by Pope Francis.

The Archbishop further pointed to the new pontiff’s mention of family and his Easter greeting, “Peace be with you,” as a message of encouragement and perseverance.

“Let’s not give up, even when we face difficulties. Christ resurrected for us — that is our hope,” Baccay added.

Archbishop Baccay also urged the faithful to open their hearts and live out the values of love, inclusion, and compassion and called on the Church to continue being a welcoming presence in both word and action. (OTB/PIA Region 2)
