Army-school partnership now covers scholarships for ex-rebels, dependents

BALER, Aurora (PIA) —The coverage of the partnership between the 91st Infantry Battalion (91st IB) and the Lyceum of the East-Aurora (LEA) has been extended to cover the scholarships of former rebels and their dependents.

Under the Memorandum of Partnership (MOP), LEA offers bachelor’s degrees, technical-vocational training accredited by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), and junior and senior high school scholarships.

91st IB Acting Commanding Officer Lt. Col. Aries Quinto said the initiative is part of the national government’s efforts to help former rebels start anew as they are being reintegrated into society.

“The 91st IB is thankful to the Lyceum of the East-Aurora for the partnership. This is part of our mission to provide quality education for our scholars and an opportunity to help them fulfill their dreams,” Quinto added.

Meanwhile, LEA President Jaime Gose said that the collaboration would allow both the college and 91st IB to be a part of efforts to cultivate the intellectual capacity of young people as a manifestation of a genuine dedication to education.

“The MOP will be renewed now and then. LEA will continue to provide scholarship slots to former rebels and their dependents,” he pointed out.

One of the former rebels, now a third year student taking a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the 91st IB and LEA for the scholarship.

“We should prove to everyone that the opportunities given to us are worthy and should not be wasted. This is the time to attain our dreams with the help of the 91st IB and LEA,” she said.

Under the partnership agreement, former rebels and their dependents and siblings could enjoy the grant covering free tuition, miscellaneous fees, and other school fees.

The scholarship program also extends to the dependents of soldiers and Citizen Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) members.

CAFGU personnel and their dependents receive free tuition and a 75 percent discount on miscellaneous fees, while active personnel of the 91st IB and their dependents and siblings receive free tuition and a 50 percent discount on miscellaneous fees. (CLJD/MAT, PIA Region 3-Aurora)
