ATI-10 empowers 46 seed growers via inbred rice seed prod’n training

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA)–As the Department of Agriculture (DA) steers its focus toward cultivating a skilled cadre of inbred rice seed growers, 46 aspiring seed growers in Region 10 participated in a comprehensive two-batch training program on inbred rice seed production and certification for potential seed growers through the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI)-10.

The five-day training, which delved into critical modules covering the nuances of the Rice Tariffication Law, Seed Production, and Seed Certification, was also conducted to recognize the pivotal role of seed growers in ensuring a continuous and reliable supply of high-quality seeds.

It also aims to develop potential farmers to apply appropriate seed production practices and become accredited seed growers in the region.

Personnel from the Bureau of Plant Industry-National Seed Quality Control Services-10 provided expert guidance through comprehensive lectures. They also expounded on the mechanics, policies, and guidelines governing seed certification. The trainers further underscored the role of seed growers in achieving a continuous and reliable supply of high-quality seeds.

A hands-on activity on roguing, a meticulous process for ensuring seed purity, was a significant part of the training. Participants engaged in practical exercises to reinforce their understanding of the seed production cycle, underscoring the importance of maintaining purity from planting to harvesting.

Field visits to PhilRice CMU added a practical dimension to the training. Participants had the opportunity to witness cutting-edge storage facilities, gaining insights into the critical aspect of proper seed storage. Also, understanding how to maintain the physiological condition of seeds from harvesting to planting emerged as a key takeaway from these visits.

As these empowered seed growers return to their fields, armed with knowledge, skills, and a deepened understanding of the intricacies of seed production, they are poised to play a significant role in realizing DA’s vision of a self-sufficient and resilient agricultural landscape. The training also signifies a crucial step toward securing the nation’s food future through a robust and knowledgeable community of rice seed growers. (ATI-10/PIA-10)
