Autism awareness remains a challenge —ASP Davao

DAVAO CITY (PIA) — In celebration of World Autism Month this April, the Autism Society Philippines (ASP) Davao acknowledged the growing public awareness of autism, while stressing that full understanding remains a significant challenge.

ASP Davao President Uswaldo Parreñas emphasized that many people still struggle to grasp the true nature of autism, largely because individuals with autism often do not show any obvious physical differences. As a result, autism can go unnoticed or misunderstood.

“Sa awareness level, I would say, hindi pa talaga fully complete ang awareness level because in our experience, there are still situations or incidents where some lay people still cannot understand the meaning of autism,”  Parreñas said.

He pointed out the importance of continued public education to help bridge this gap in understanding. Parreñas explained that while individuals with autism may not exhibit physical differences, they can be identified through their social skills, making awareness efforts even more critical.

Alongside raising awareness, ASP Davao is actively promoting early intervention and family support.

“This is very important—that we give the right intervention at an early stage of the child’s development.” Parreñas said.

In line with their advocacy, ASP Davao will hold the annual Angels Walk for Autism on Sunday, April 13, 2025, at SM City Davao, with approximately 2,000 participants expected from across Davao. The event serves as a platform not only to raise awareness but also to foster acceptance of individuals with autism.

“Because one of the aims of the Autism Society Philippines is to create, aside from awareness, a focus this month on acceptance. We want everyone to accept individuals who have this condition—autism.” Parreñas said. (REC / PIA XI)
