Avoid entertaining suspicious messages to avoid scam, NBI advises

BAGUIO CITY (PIA) — The National Bureau of Investigation-Cordillera (NBI-CAR) is advising the public not to entertain suspicious messages they receive through emails, phone calls, or text messages to avoid being scammed or victims of fraud.

NBI-CAR Regional Director Atty. Daniel Daganzo said that it is important for the public to discern and verify if the text messages or emails they receive are legit or not. With their limited manpower and facilities, Daganzo said they cannot go after every scammer.

“So, what do we do is to encourage the public, dahil hindi rin naman kami makakapag-imbestiga sa ganyan kung wala silang participation. Kung sakali lang meron kayong mga information na ang isang website ay involved sa ganitong scam, either kung di pa naman kayo biktima, huwag na lang kayo pumasok doon. ‘Wag na lang tangkilikin ‘yun,” he said.

To avoid financial fraud especially involving investment, Daganzo advises the public to verify with concerned government agencies the legitimacy individuals or organizations making the offer.

People should be aware that if the investment offer promises large gains and little risk, or too good to be true, it certainly is a scam, he said. Report any suspicious activities to the authorities, he added.

“Kung meron kayong suspicious na transaction, kunan niyo ng picture ‘yung ka-transaction ninyo,” Daganzo advised.

He also appealed for public cooperation for the successful entrapment operation against scammers.

Complainants should go personally to the NBI to give a statement. Bring along documents as evidence which may be screenshots of text messages, links, or photo of the transaction as these are a big help in the investigation process, Daganzo added. (JDP/DEG/Betha Servito-PIA CAR- SLU Intern)
