Bacnotan’s ‘Ang Wish Ko’ program brings joy to underprivileged children

BACNOTAN, La Union (PIA) – The municipality of Bacnotan showcased its commitment to community development with the 9th “Ang Wish Ko” program held on December 7 at Bacnotan Farmers’ Park and Civic Center here.

This annual initiative focuses on combating child malnutrition and addressing health issues among vulnerable groups.

This year, 167 children aged five and below—identified as undernourished through the Operation Timbang Plus data from the Municipal Nutrition Action Office (MNAO) and Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS)—were the focus of the program.

These children, coming from 47 barangays, were selected based on their nutritional status, reflecting Bacnotan’s mission to ensure no child is left behind.

“Ang Wish Ko” initiative has consistently aimed to deliver joy, hope, and practical support to Bacnotanean families in need.

Over the years, the program has reached thousands of children, providing not just gifts but also opportunities for health education and community engagement.

“This program, which began in 2015, has become a symbol of our government’s care for our people, especially children in need. For nine years, we have continued to bring happiness and hope,” said Mayor Divine Fontanilla, emphasizing how the program reflects the spirit of love and service central to Bacnotan’s governance.

She added that the success of the project is attributed to the active participation of local stakeholders.

The gifts and toys provided through the Bacnotan Toy Drive 2024 were donated by employees of the local government unit (LGU), civic organizations, and Bacnotanean families who embody the true meaning of Christmas by sharing their blessings.

The inclusion of undernourished children as beneficiaries aligns with Bacnotan’s ongoing initiatives to combat malnutrition.

Through partnerships with the MNAO, BNS, and healthcare providers, the municipality ensures its programs are data-driven and responsive to the needs of vulnerable populations.

Aside from gifts and toys, children were given nutritional supplements, food packs, and access to health checkups during the event.

These interventions are part of a long-term strategy to improve their health, including regular follow-ups and monitoring through community health programs.

Meanwhile, Vice Mayor Francis Fontanilla highlighted the broader significance of the program.

“This is not just about providing gifts; it’s about delivering care and creating solutions that address the root causes of malnutrition and health challenges among our children. Every small act brings us closer to building a stronger and healthier community,” Vice Mayor Fontanilla said.

“Ang Wish Ko” forms part of Bacnotan’s broader advocacy for sustainable community development.

Beyond the festive season, the local government continues to implement initiatives aimed at improving nutrition, education, and healthcare for all constituents of the town.

Mark Lazaga, father of a child beneficiary, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the LGU for selecting his child as a recipient of the outreach program, highlighting the significant impact of such initiatives on families in need.

“This gesture from the LGU has brought hope to our family, and we are deeply thankful for the support that will make a difference in my child’s life,” Lazaga said.

These efforts are complemented by other programs such as feeding initiatives, livelihood support for parents, and health education campaigns that empower families to improve their quality of life.

As the initiative approaches its 10th year in 2025, the local government envisions expanding its reach to include more children and families in need.

The program plans to incorporate more holistic approaches, such as mental health support for children and parenting seminars to strengthen family systems.

By prioritizing the health and happiness of its youngest citizens, Bacnotan continues to set a benchmark for compassionate governance.

Programs like “Ang Wish Ko” demonstrate how small but meaningful initiatives can create ripples of positive change in the community.

With the spirit of giving and collaboration alive in Bacnotan, the town remains steadfast in its mission to build a brighter future for its constituents. (AMB/KJCR, PIA La Union)
