The event spearheaded by the local government unit, the City Social Welfare and Development Office, and the Kalipunan ng Liping Pilipina (KALIPI) Women Federation ng Baguio City Chapter, the show  aimed to help address the pressing issue of waste management thru the 10 Rs, creativity, and innovative designs. It was also a means to promote a circular economy, a system in which waste materials are given new life to reduce waste problems

Lolita Castro, president of KALIPI Federation Baguio Chapter, cited the important role of women in promoting a circular economy and in influencing families in empowering the community.

“Napakalaki ang role ng ating mga kababaihan sa pag-sustain ng 10 Rs. Ang role natin ay nagsa-start sa ating bahay, tayo ang nagtuturo sa ating mga anak kung paano mag-segregate para mabawasan ang basura at makatulong tayo sa ating siyudad. Malaking tulong ang ating mga kababaihan, dahil sa kanila ay nai-propromote ang circular economy through waste management in their barangays,” Castro said.

Lucia Ruiz, chair of the Board of Judges, further explained the integral role of women in sustainable environmental practices and waste management.

“Nakikita natin talaga ‘yung creativity ng kababaihan on how waste can be repurposed again to something that can be used and appreciated, very relevant. There are other uses of things that we feel useless, kaya ‘yung creativity and craftsmanship ay lumalabas dito sa mga kababaihan. Ito ‘yung integral role of women in waste management—from something that is a throw away, nakita nila na mayroon pa palang ibang gamit,” Ruiz said.

The eco fashion show not only showcased the beauty and creativity of women in the city, but it also highlighted empowered persons with disabilities.

Brigida Padilan, a participant with physical disability, surprised and amazed the crowd as she walked onstage to inspire others to never lose hope despite their conditions.

“Kaya ako sumali para ipakita na hindi hadlang ang kapansanan para makilahok sa ganitong mga event—na kahit ganito na may kapansanan ka ay may pag-asa,” Padilan shared.

The event was also in celebration of National Women’s Month with the theme, “Babae sa Lahat ng Sektor, Aangat ang Bukas sa Bagong Pilipinas.” (JDP/DEG/Carolyn Ventura-PIA CAR-DMMMSU Intern)
