BAI intensifies animal shipment inspections in NCR to combat ASF spread

QUEZON CITY (PIA) — The Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI), in partnership with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and local government units, is ramping up its inspection and monitoring of animal shipments across the National Capital Region (NCR).

This intensified effort is a key component of the ongoing campaign to safeguard animal health and prevent the spread of diseases like African Swine Fever (ASF).

As of August 28, 2024, authorities have inspected 1,963 shipments of live animals and meat products at various checkpoints throughout NCR.

Among these, 113 shipments were sent back to their points of origin due to non-compliance with animal health regulations. Additionally, 13 shipments were subjected to further testing to confirm they were disease-free, and 10 shipments were condemned due to serious health risks. A total of 1,827 shipments were cleared and released after successfully meeting all regulatory requirements.

The enhanced inspection of animal shipments is a vital part of the broader strategy to ensure that all transported animals adhere to health regulations, particularly in areas at high risk for disease outbreaks.

BAI remains committed to collaborating with law enforcement and local government units to maintain strict oversight of animal transport within NCR. These ongoing efforts are critical to protecting the nation’s livestock industry, ensuring the safety of our animals, and ultimately safeguarding the welfare of Filipino consumers.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) strongly urges hog traders and transporters to comply with all regulations to prevent the further spread of ASF and other animal diseases, thereby protecting the nation’s swine industry. (DA/PIA-NCR/AVS)
