Barangay secretaries, treasurers barred from poll campaigning

LEGAZPI CITY (PIA) — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has warned appointed barangay officials against endorsing candidates in the May 12 elections, emphasizing the nonpartisan nature of their positions.

Regional Election Director Maria Juana Valeza said March 19 that appointed officials, such as barangay treasurers and secretaries, are prohibited from endorsing candidates, either in campaign materials or in person during campaign events.

“Our rules are clear: Elective barangay officials can engage in partisan political activities,” Valeza said in response to a question from a barangay secretary during a forum sponsored by the Department of the Interior and Local Government on Tuesday in Legazpi City.

“However, appointive barangay officials, such as secretaries, treasurers, tanods or barangay health workers, are prohibited from participating in partisan political activities using their positions,” she said. (PIA5/Masbate)
