BARMM solon proposes trade and tourism centers

MARAWI CITY (PIA) — Bangsamoro lawmakers have proposed the creation of trade and tourism centers across strategic cities in the region, aiming to drive economic growth, promote local culture, and create sustainable infrastructure.

Parliament Bill No. 346, or the BARMM Trade and Tourism Center Development Act, outlines plans for the establishment of these centers in Cotabato City, Lamitan City in Basilan, Marawi City in Lanao del Sur, Jolo in Sulu, and Bongao in Tawi-Tawi.

The proposed centers will serve as commerce, investment, and tourism hubs. It seeks to promote sustainable infrastructure and create opportunities for local businesses and entrepreneurs.

The bill calls for each center’s architectural design to reflect the traditions and culture of its respective province, incorporating indigenous elements and symbols that honor the diverse identity of the region.

Member of the Parliament John Anthony Lim, principal author of the bill, said that the centers will not only promote business and investment opportunities but also celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the region.

The centers will feature several core facilities, including Business and Investment Centers, Trade Exhibition Halls, Tourism and Cultural Pavilions, Training and Innovation Hubs, and Marketplace and Commercial Zones.

The bill also envisions additional infrastructure, including hotels and commercial spaces, which will be developed through Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs). The construction process will prioritize local contractors, laborers, and materials, providing employment opportunities and boosting the local economy.

The Ministry of Trade, Investment, and Tourism will oversee the construction of the centers, ensuring that they meet safety, environmental, and architectural standards. (BTA Parliament/PIA-10 Lanao del Sur)
