Basilan advocates awareness vs illegal recruitment, trafficking in persons

ISABELA CITY, Basilan (PIA) – The members of the Provincial Committee on Anti-Trafficking and Violence Against Women and their Children (PCAT-VAWC) participated in the advocacy campaign against illegal recruitment, trafficking in persons and irregular migration held recently in Isabela City de Basilan.

The event spearheaded by the Provincial Government of Basilan, in partnership with the Ministry of Labor and Employment (MOLE) BARMM, hoped to raise awareness about the dangers of Illegal Recruitment (IR), Trafficking in Persons (TIP), and Irregular Migration (IM).

Speakers of the event include Amna Farrah A. Alihuddin, provincial head of MOLE-Basilan Field Office, who discussed illegal recruitment, and Sara Jane S. Sinsuat, JD, director of the Bureau of Employment Promotion and Welfare, who explained about trafficking in persons and irregular migration.

Alihuddin stressed the importance of being aware of prohibited acts such as overcharging, misrepresentation, immorality, obstruction, failure to submit reports, withholding, incompatible trade, construct substitution, failure to deploy, and failure to reimburse. She also highlighted the need to stay vigilant in every way.

Meanwhile, Sinsuat underscored the three main elements of trafficking in persons which are acts, means, and purpose. She explained that trafficking in persons involves recruitment, hiring, and transfer using force or threat for exploitation and sexual abuse. She also discussed irregular migration, which involves moving across an international border or staying within a state without necessary documents or permits.

Nulkaisa E. Alidain, chief admin officer from the Provincial Office Government, said that empowering members of the community members as essential in raising awareness about important issues such as trafficking in persons and irregular migration. 

The event aimed to strengthen the capacity of the committee members in disseminating information on the strategies in countering illegal recruitment and trafficking in persons in the province. (EDT/NDR/MGA-PIA Basilan)
