Basilan LGUs surrender 61 loose firearms to military

ISABELA CITY, Basilan (PIA) – In another step toward peace and security, 61 assorted loose firearms were officially surrendered recently by various local government units (LGUs) in the province, marking a significant effort in the campaign against the proliferation of illicit weapons.

Governor Jim Hataman-Salliman and Brigadier General Alvin V. Luzon of the 101st Infantry Brigade inspect the cache of loose firearms surrendered by various local government units across the province.

The surrender, facilitated by the LGUs of Isabela City and Lamitan City, along with Tuburan, Akbar, Sumisip, Maluso, Lantawan, Tabuan-Lasa and Hadji Muhtamad, was presented to Brigadier General Alvin V. Luzon of the 101st Infantry Brigade and Governor Jim Hataman-Salliman through the Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) Management Program, held at Camp Luis Biel II, Barangay Tabiawan, Isabela City.

The SALW Management Program started in 2024, leading to the successful collection of 325 firearms, both high-powered and low-powered, all set to undergo demilitarization.

The next phase is a crucial element of the formal declaration of Basilan as an Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG)-free province, marking a historic milestone in the province’s journey toward peace and stability.

This initiative aligns with the broader efforts of the national government demonstrated during the ceremonial demilitarization of 550 firearms on March 2, 2024, which President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. witnessed, underscoring the government’s commitment to support Basilan’s normalization and peace-building initiatives.

Implemented by the 101st Infantry Brigade, in collaboration with the Provincial Government of Basilan and national peace agencies, the SALW Program plays a critical role in fulfilling the goals of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB).

Moreover, key support from the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU) and peace partners proved vital in curbing the spread of loose firearms and enhancing community security in previously conflict-affected areas.

The program also achieved a significant milestone in July 2024, where 172 firearms were turned over in an event themed “Buwah nen Kasanyangan” (Fruits of Peace in Yakan). The activity highlighted a signed Memorandum of Agreement among the Basilan Provincial Government, OPAPRU and other stakeholders, demonstrating strong collaboration toward lasting peace.

Further supporting this transition, the 101st Infantry Brigade has also facilitated livelihood support under the ASPIRE Project (Assistance for Security, Peace, Integration and Recovery), providing economic opportunities to former firearm holders and helping reintegrate them into peaceful, productive civilian life.
